Kentucky Livestock Innovation Center: Advancing the Future of Agriculture
Kentucky's livestock industry is a major driver of the Commonwealth's economy, supporting thousands of farm families and generating billions of dollars in agricultural revenue each year. To strengthen the industry's future, agricultural leaders, policymakers, and educators have partnered to create the Kentucky Livestock Innovation Center (KLIC), a first-of-its-kind facility focused on research, education, workforce development, and market growth.
A Hub for Innovation and Industry Collaboration
Managed by the Kentucky Cattlemen's Foundation, KLIC was established to connect producers, researchers, educators, processors, retailers, and consumers. Its mission is to advance Kentucky agriculture by promoting innovation, improving producer profitability, and supporting long-term industry growth.
Recognizing the importance of livestock production to the state's economy, the Kentucky General Assembly invested $22 million in the project. The center is a public-private partnership between the Kentucky Cattlemen's Association and the University of Kentucky Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment.
Located on 15 acres at the University's C. Oran Little Research Center in Versailles, KLIC will provide access to research, emerging technologies, and educational opportunities designed to help producers address industry challenges and improve efficiency.
Supporting Producers and the Next Generation
KLIC's programs are focused on helping livestock operations remain competitive while preparing future agricultural leaders. Key priorities include:
· Workforce Development: Training programs to strengthen Kentucky's livestock production and processing workforce.
· Value-Added Agriculture: Supporting new technologies and market opportunities that increase product value.
· Producer Profitability: Expanding marketing opportunities and business strategies that improve farm sustainability.
· Student Enrichment: Providing hands-on educational experiences for future industry professionals.
By combining research, technology transfer, and industry partnerships, the center aims to deliver practical solutions that benefit operations of all sizes.
Connecting the Food System
KLIC is designed to support every stage of the livestock supply chain, from animal health and production to processing, marketing, and consumer education.
A planned Culinary Training Center will provide workforce training for food processing, retail, and hospitality professionals while promoting Kentucky-produced livestock products and value-added food development.
This broader approach recognizes that industry success depends on both efficient production and strong consumer confidence.
Promoting Sustainability and Growth
The center will also support sustainable livestock production through research and education focused on environmental stewardship, animal welfare, traceability, and food safety.
In addition, KLIC will help educate consumers about modern livestock production practices, strengthening public trust and supporting long-term demand for Kentucky agricultural products.

Supported by a coalition of livestock, grain, soybean, and agricultural organizations across the state, the Kentucky Livestock Innovation Center represents a significant investment in Kentucky's agricultural future.
As construction and programming continue, KLIC is expected to become a regional leader in livestock research, workforce development, and protein innovation, helping Kentucky producers remain competitive in a rapidly evolving agricultural marketplace.
